New College Students and Faculty Receive High Praise for their Scholarship, Service, and Teaching

Dr. Ellen Spears received the Call to Conscience Award that goes to an individual who provides leadership and courage on January 12, 2018 at the annual “Realizing the Dream” banquet. . She is the author of the award-winning book “Baptized in PCBs: Race, Pollution, and Justice in an All-American Town,” which documents Anniston’s civil rights history and how it tied into the chemical company Monsanto dumping harmful pollutants in a predominately African-American and blue-collar part of town that resulted in a legal battle between residents and the company in the 1990s. Spears credits King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as an inspiration.

New College students Brittany Grady and Asia Hayes were both selected for the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Junior Award.

Congratulations to Professor Jennifer Caputo for being named a 2018 Innovation Scholar in Residence. She will be recognized on Thursday, January 18 from 3:30-5:00 in the Martha Parham lobby.
